Introducing Live Boom Angle Monitoring for Luffing Jib Cranes

  • Improved safety: Teams (on or off-site) and operators can see the crane’s boom angle to make sure it’s parked correctly, reducing the risk of the crane being caught by high winds or damaged.

  • Accurate records & reporting: Boom angle measurements are stored and available in reports, helping as proof of boom angle for lifting or safety purposes.

Windcrane has developed a boom angle sensor that measures and records the crane boom angles and provides real-time operational data for luffing jib cranes. Falcon Tower Cranes has implemented this technology, adding an extra layer of safety and security to their operations.

Luffing jib cranes have a specific minimum park radius. Parking at too steep an angle can prevent the crane from weather vaning, and roped luffing jib cranes risk the jib being blown backwards in high winds. Accurate park radius measurements are therefore critical for safe operations.

The inclinometer allows boom angles to be monitored online 24/7, providing full visibility and confidence that the crane is safely positioned, even in challenging weather conditions.

Rupert Cook, Associate Service Director at Falcon Tower Cranes, said:

“The online weekly report looks good. Windcrane was really helpful assisting with the setup. We can see exactly what the crane was parked at overnight, when it started, and when it stopped for the day. It’s impressive, and I think it’s a real showcase addition for crane hire and operation.”

This system not only reminds operators of crucial safety measures but also records and monitors park positions in real time, helping prevent potentially catastrophic consequences in storms.

By combining innovative technology with careful operational practice, Falcon Tower Cranes is setting a new standard for crane hire safety.

Windcrane’s live boom angle monitoring is a simple, effective, and fully transparent solution designed to improve crane safety and operational efficiency across the industry.
